I have so much catching up to do it isn't funny -- this year has been a marathon to get through and has left me little to no time to enjoy fannish things. I have time off work so I'm looking forward to getting back into the pool and paddling around with you all.

Again with the Real! Enough I say!

I'm on a break from work, long past the time I needed it. I'm recovering from:

• Graduating from uni (yes, when it is an 8 hour drive to get there it requires significant recovery time)

• Scary - and separate - things happening to both Offspring

• The prospect of not having a job to go back to after my break (decision made by bureaucrat off-site, trying not to take it personally)

So much shit in such a short time. In the words of the Younger Offspring, "can I say the fuck word now?"

... I do like my BA though...
And, I intend to post the next chapter of ficcery tomorrow.

There is upwards of 100 people still trapped in rubble around Christchurch.

There were 400 doctors from Oz attending a medical conference in Christchurch when the quake hit. Some ran out grabbing whatever supplies they could from local chemists as they treated injured survivors.

350 military personnel were already in Christchurch when the quake hit -- NZ warships are in port.

If anyone on my flist (or off it) is in Christchurch NZ, I hope you are okay and can reassure us that you are very soon. I'm hopeless at plotting my internet buddies on the map, so I'm not sure who I know from NZ. This quake has done far more damage to Christchurch than the last one despite being less powerful -- that's because it was a 'shallow' rather than a quake that spends its force deeper under the surface. The nature of the ground under the city of Christchurch, which has a water table underneath, means that roads have been swallowed and replaced by sandy ponds.

This is rotten for the Kiwis. The death toll is most certainly going to be higher as time passes. My heart goes out to you all.
